Word Chain Examples

A word chain is a sequence of words where each word starts with the last letter of the word before it. That single rule is the heart of Chain Reaction. Below you'll find more than 20 ready-to-use word chain examples: easy chains for kids and ESL practice, themed chains, high-scoring chains, hard-letter escapes, plus Spanish and French examples and the letter strategy that separates casual players from leaderboard regulars.

What does a word chain look like?

A simple chain

appleelephanttigerrabbitturtleegg

Apple ends in e, so elephant works. Elephant ends in t, so tiger follows. Tiger ends in r, rabbit ends in t, turtle ends in e, and the chain keeps rolling.

A high-scoring chain

Points scale with word length, so an 8-letter word is worth roughly double a 4-letter word. Long words take longer to type, though. Balance ambition against the ticking timer.

Escaping a hard letter

Stuck starting with x? Memorize a couple of escape words like xylophone, xenon or xerox. Notice how xylophone immediately hands you a friendly e to continue from.

En español

gatoosoorejaarenaazul

The same rule works in Spanish: gato ends in o, oso follows, then oreja, arena and azul. Chain Reaction has a full Spanish dictionary and daily challenge.

En français

chattigreescargottrainnuage

And in French: chat ends in t, tigre follows, then escargot, train and nuage. The French dictionary has its own daily challenge and leaderboard too.

Which letters should you end your words with?

In Chain Reaction, the last letter of the word you play decides which letter you must start with next. Ending on a common starting letter keeps your options wide open; ending on a rare one can kill your chain.

Strategy Letters Why
Aim to end with e, s, t, a, n, r Thousands of everyday words start with these letters, so your next move is easy.
Avoid ending with q, x, z, j Very few words start with these letters. Unless you've memorized escape words, the chain often dies here.
